Acer palmatum 'Ikandi'

Rare Pink Variegated Ikandi Japanese Maple Tree

Zones 5-9

'Ikandi', pronouced "Eye Candy", is an excellent new introduction by Talon Buchholz. When this tree first leafs out, the leaves can be almost solid pink. This is perhaps the pinkest of the reticulated Japanese maples. Green slowly comes in the veins of the leaf, as the pink leaf becomes almost white.  New growth in the summer is a solid green, but don't worry as this will be variegated the following year. 'Ikandi' becomes more and more variegated with age.  For those with cold frames, 'Ikandi' variegates best when it leafs outside. We predict that 'Ikandi' may reach up to 10-12 ft in 15 years. Fall colors are oranges to red. Note this tree does not revert, but when grown in the cold frames at our nursery 1 gallons do not show variegation until the following year.

Limited Quantities Available !! As we have over a thousand cultivars of Japanese maples, we often do not have many of each cultivar. We recommend that you buy the Japanese maples you want immediately as we often sell out of certain selections.

I mean wow

This tree is gorgeous. It always makes me think “watermelon bubblegum!.” When it is leafed out slowly, in spring the leaves are similar to Hagaseyama style with pinks and greens that are unbelievably vibrant. The color fades to white and green in the summer and new growth is green with minimal variegation. Fall color this year started with the whites blushing back to pink, and by the end it was all a very deep pink. Last year (from the greenhouse at MrMaple), it’s fall color had oranges and yellows. This is an absolutely stunning tree and highly recommended!
