Azalea 'Johanna' Evergreen Azalea
Red Evergreen Azalea
'Johanna' is a kaempferi hybrid that is a stunning red blooming azalea. The original kaempferi hybrids were collected in the mountains of Japan and sent to Kew Gardens in 1895. Ever since hybridizers have been using these beautiful azalea genetics to add cold tolerance and good blooming to their breeding work. Van Nes used these genetics to create Johanna, introducing it in 1969. The vibrant cherry red blooms are quite large, making ‘Johanna’ especially showy. ‘Johanna’ may reach 4 ft in height by 5 ft in width in 10 years.
