Acer pictum ssp mono is an amazing species. It is oftened reffered to as the "Batwing Maple" as the large green leaves resemble a bat in flight. This species grows natively in Japan reaching 15-20 ft in height in 10 years. They continue to grow after this time frame, creating a rare and beautiful tree for the landscape. In the photo in fall color is a photo of a batwing maple Matt and I spotted in the wild in Japan at Nikko National Park. When we visited JD Vetrees home and gardens, he also had a large batwing maple in his landscape. It makes a beautiful tree. The fall color is a bright golden yellow.
