Fothergilla x 'Redneck Nation'
Flowering Fothergilla

Zones 4-8

'Redneck Nation' flowering Fothergilla displays clusters of dense, bottlebrush-like flowers, boasting a fragrant array of frilly white to cream hues, grace the tips of bare stems during late winter or early spring. 'Redneck Nation' Fothergilla, also known as Witch Alder, is a native deciduous shrub of moderate density, ranging from small to medium in size. Its striking gray-green and bronze new growth matures into a serene blue-green shade by summer, while the fall foliage dazzles in shades of red, orange, and yellow. Newly discovered in 2020, this species bears the cultivar name in tribute to botanist and naturalist Fred Nation, who first encountered it in Baldwin County, Alabama, while its species name honors Dr. Ron Miller.

For optimal growth and blooming, plant Redneck Nation Fothergilla in average moist, well-drained, acidic soil, positioning it in a location that receives full to partial sunlight. This versatile shrub can be utilized as a low-maintenance informal hedge, a standout specimen in garden landscapes, or incorporated into naturalistic settings. While the flowers and fall foliage resemble those depicted in the image of Mt. Airy Fothergilla, Redneck Nation Fothergilla offers similar visual delights.
