Picea mariana 'Horstmann's Dwarf'
Black Spruce
Zones 3-8
Picea mariana ‘Horstmann’s Dwarf’ is a compact, irregular-upright selection of black spruce known for its distinctive, sometimes clumpy branching and fine blue-green needles that show off prominent buds in winter. This slow-growing conifer typically reaches about 2 to 2.5 ft tall and around 1 to 1.5 ft wide in 10 years, adding roughly 2 to 2.5 inches of growth per year. Though its exact origins are uncertain, the name suggests it was introduced by Horstmann Nurseries in Schneverdingen, Germany.
