Rhododendron cumberlandense

Deciduous Native Cumberland Azalea

Orange to Red Native Azalea

Zones 5b-9

‘Rhododendron cumberlandense, known as the Cumberland Azalea, is a gorgeous native azalea. When it was named by Lucy Braun nearly 80 years ago, it was described as the red azalea of the Cumberlands. Mountaineers before her had often referred to this azalea as the "Red Honeysuckle".  The Cumberland Azalea has larger leaves and orange to red blooms throughout the spring. Rhododendron cumberlandense tends to be smaller than other native azaleas reaching 4 ft in height by 3 ft in width in 10 years.
