'Oshu shidare' will grab your attention with bright pink red spring color, maturing to a mauve red by late spring to early summer. By late summer the leaves transform to an olive green serving as an excellent background for the summer flush of pink-red new growth. In autumn, the bright crimson fall color makes this tree look like a ball of fire in the landscape. The upright yet weeping habit of 'Oshu shidare' is what makes the cultivar extremely special. This tree may get 6-7ft high in 10 years with about an equal spread. This cascading shape provides a unique texture in the garden. "Oshu" might refer to a Japanese word that means "red" as many bright red selections have this term, while "shidare" refers to this trees weeping habit. This selection is an Acer matsumurae, but not a laceleaf. There is another tree in Japan that carries this name as well.
