'Schmidt's Woods' is a favorite among the nursery visitors. 'Schmidt's Woods' leafs out as a bright red, maturing to a emerald green-red. The bright red new growth contrasts nicely older growth. The long strap leaves add extra texture and interest. I am not sure if it is simply a seedling from the woods at one of the Schmidt Nurseries or another strapleaf seedling from Ed Wood, but it is a beautiful tree. 'Schmidt's Woods' stands out from similar cultivars like 'Beni otake' because of the color contrast we see here at the nursery. It also appears to be a much smaller and denser grower. We would expect 'Schmidt's Woods' to get 8-10 ft in 15 years. Fall color is a bright red.
