Acer sieboldianum 'Seki no kegon'

Weeping Cold Tolerant Japanese Maple

Zones 4-9

As a recent introduction from the Fukushima Prefecture, this cultivar wasn't even available commercially in Japan until 2008. Here at MrMaple.com, just a few years later, it is now available here in America!

In the 2010 Summer edition of the Maple Society newsletter, this cultivar was featured as an interesting new specimen with photos and measurements of the original tree in Fukushima. It was discovered in 1970 as a weeping sieboldianum seedling. Over 30 years old, the original tree stood only 10 feet tall.

The name 'Seki' comes from the family name of Mr. Kazou Seki, who originally found this phenomenal tree. 'Kegon' comes from the famous cascading waterfall 'Kegon-no-taki'.

'Seki-no-kegon' is truly beautiful. In Japanese maples, 99% of all weeping cultivars have deeply divided lace-leaves. 'Seki-no-kegon' does not. It has large, lush leaves creating a more full and elegant look. Early in the fall, it turns to a dark red, later turning to a bright vibrant red before losing its leaves. With its large, lush leaves and its weeping habit 'Seki-no-kegon' will make a great addition to any garden or maple collection.

It has been noticed at our nursery that young plants are semi-pendulous, cascading much heavier as the tree ages.

These 'Seki no kegon' have been grafted onto Acer sieboldianum so that they thrive in cold zones as cold as zone 4 and maybe even colder.  The 'Seki no Kegon' can grow 3 to 4 ft tall by 6 to 8 ft wide in 10 years.

Limited Quantities Available !! As we have over a thousand cultivars of Japanese maples, we often do not have many of each cultivar. We recommend that you buy the Japanese maples you want immediately as we often sell out of certain selections.
