Tsuga canadensis 'Stockman's Dwarf' Dwarf Canadian Hemlock
Partial Shade
Zone 4-7
Tsuga canadensis 'Stockman's Dwarf' is a very slow-growing selection of Canadian hemlock prized for its short, thick, and densely arranged dark green foliage. Its nest-shaped form features beautifully layered branches with a cloud-like quality that gives it a graceful, almost sculptural presence in the landscape. A mature specimen will reach approximately 20 inches (50 cm) tall and wide after 10 years, growing at a tidy rate of around 2 inches (5 cm) per year. It performs best in partial shade to full sun.
This cultivar originated as a seedling selection made in the early 1940s by Stockman's Nursery in Geneva, New York, where it was given the provisional name 'Compacta MK1'. John Vermeulen & Son Nursery of Neshanic Station, New Jersey introduced it to the broader nursery trade around 1960. An excellent choice for rock gardens, troughs, or as a refined specimen planting.
