About Bloodgood

Acer Palmatum 'Bloodgood' is one of the most classic trees in all of horticulture. Bloodgood is classic for it's dark red spring color and large Palmatum style leaf. The dark maroon foliage can fade a little bit during mid summer, and the fall colors get to exuberant fire-engine reds. Bloodgood is a moderate grower that will make a nice upright form that grows up to  approximately 12-14 feet in 15 years. It is one of the most common Japanese Maples so you've probably seen this tree in landscapes before. Bloodgood has many uses, such as focal point in gardens and showpieces. It's a tree that will look good in each of the seasons and the bright red will brighten up spots in your garden.

Bloodgood is a classic Japanese Maple that will do well in anyone's landscape. One thing that Tim and Matt have noticed that is odd is that people have seedlings from Bloodgood, which are not Bloodgood. Seedlings from Bloodgood may be similar, but they may have different fall colors, different heights, or they may not be able to handle the sun as well. The true form of Bloodgood is a fantastic tree. Matt uses the example saying "You may have seen this in some of our previous videos, but we often joke that me and Tim are brothers and we don't even look that much alike, and so that can certainly happen with Japanese Maples too." The only way to get a true quality form of a Bloodgood is from graft.

Once Bloodgood leafs out, the leaves will get more full and a bit larger as the season progresses, with a really nice red color. Bloodgood is exceptionally heat tolerant, growing in full sun exposure in Zones 5-8. This tree is extremely hardy, good down to -20° F. Many people line their driveways to add a lot of color as they're driving into their homes.
