Acer oliverianum ssp. formosanum

The Ultimate Heat Tolerant Maple
Extremely Rare Taiwanese Maple Oliver's Taiwanese Maple

Zones 7-10

This species is spectacular. Acer oliverianum ssp. formosanum has phenomenal dynamic colors throughout the seasons and forms a small mid-sized tree reaching 15-18ft in 15-20 years.

In the early spring Oliver's Taiwanese maple unfurls buds of coral pink with large palmate leaves. It is easy to see it's close relation to your typical Japanese maple. During late spring this ornamental tree turns to bright green before putting on a pink-red summer new flush of growth. During the fall Acer oliverianum ssp. fomosanum turns to bright oranges that are infused with gold.

While this mid-sized tree provides great color in the landscape, it is also is extremely heat tolerant, making it very useful in the southern landscape. This species has been trial tested in southern Georgia and has proved to be a great maple for the deep south.

Limited Quantities Available !! As we have over a thousand cultivars of Japanese maples, we often do not have many of each cultivar. We recommend that you buy Japanese maples you want immediately as we often sell out of certain selections.

Thriving in Southern California

I have 3 maples in my front yard. Bloodgood, Shantung Firedragon and this tree Acer oliverianum ssp. The bloodgood is struggling under the CA heat. The Firedragon is thriving as well as the Acer oliverianum ssp. Beautiful bright green color in the spring and the canopy is beautiful. Like a Japanese Maple you would see in a poster or painting. I might have to replace the bloodgood with another one.

My Favorite Tree

There is a very large one of these at the Mobile Botanical Gardens. It is my favorite tree on the property. It thrives down here on the Gulf Coast. A truly remarkable tree!
