Acer palmatum ‘Sherwood Flame’ is a striking Japanese maple known for its bold structure, rich color, and excellent heat tolerance. New foliage emerges a deep red-purple to burgundy in spring and holds strong color through the summer months. As fall approaches, leaves transition through reddish-green before finishing in a brilliant cherry red, while heavy seed sets add ornamental interest. With time, this vigorous, broad-topped tree develops a rounded form and distinctive silver striations on its bark, offering beautiful winter appeal. Selected by Will Curtis of Sherwood, Oregon from seedlings of ‘Burgundy Lace,’ this cultivar typically reaches about 8 ft tall by 4 ft wide in 10 years.
