'Van Essen Gold' is a newer selection that has a gold-colored new growth on a matsumurae leaf. This leaf is serrated and highly ornamental. The golden color fades to a nice light green as the leaf matures. 'Van Essen Gold' turns yellow to orange in the fall. This selection has an upright habit reaching 8-10 ft in height in 10 years.
