Abies koreana 'Kohout’s Icebreaker'
Dwarf Korean Fir Grafted on Abies firma

Zones 4-8

'Kohout’s Icebreaker’ is a tight compact dwarf conifer with a bright white silver color. The silver color comes from the needles that twist to show what is normally the underside of the needles. This is quite attractive. Young plants make a nice dense ball shape. This miniature conifer may reach 2 ft in height and width in 10 years.

‘Kohout’s Icebreaker’ must have good drainage, so do not plant this dwarf conifer in clay and expect it to thrive. You can even use sand to increase the drainage on this slow growing fir.  This 'Kohout’s Icebreaker’ is grafted onto Abies firma which is more tolerant of the heat and humidity.

‘Kohout’s Icebreaker’ was found as a witches' broom by Jörg Kohout on the popular ‘Horstman’s Silberlocke’. ‘Kohout’s Icebreaker’ was selected by the American Conifer Society in 2014 as a Conifer of the Year.

Kohout’s Icebreaker

Have been one of these for a while. Since this one is grafted on Abies firma it should do OK in South Carolina. Beautiful small plant.
