Abies koreana 'Kohout’s Icebreaker'
Dwarf Korean Fir

Zones 4-7

'Kohout’s Icebreaker’ is a tight compact dwarf conifer with a bright white silver color. The silver color comes from the needles that twist to show what is normally the underside of the needles. This is quite attractive. Young plants make a nice dense ball shape. This miniature conifer may reach 2 ft in height and width in 10 years.

‘Kohout’s Icebreaker’ must have good drainage, so do not plant this dwarf conifer in clay and expect it to thrive. You can even use sand to increase the drainage on this slow growing fir. ‘Kohout’s Icebreaker’ is grafted onto Abies koreana which does not like heat and humidity. Make sure your climate is adequate for this amazing little tree. ‘Kohout’s Icebreaker’ was found as a witches' broom by Jörg Kohout on the popular ‘Horstman’s Silberlocke’. ‘Kohout’s Icebreaker’ was selected by the American Conifer Society in 2014 as a Conifer of the Year.
