'Longwood' Dancing Peacock Full Moon Japanese Maple Tree
The large green deeply divided leaves are ornamental in their self, but this selection like many full moon types, attains large fushia red blooms in the spring on mature plants. This shows up well against the large green leaves and provides a unique display. 'Longwood' may reach 12-15 ft in 20 years. 'Longwood' is a selection of Acer japonicum that was selected as a chance seedling at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania from a large leafed full moon maple in the gardens. 'Longwood' has the same dancing peacock leaf as 'Mai kujaku', but the fall color seems to be more consistently shades of orange. This is an older cultivar which I find interesting, as I love all the full moon types. In the hotter spots of the south, I would recommend protection from the hot afternoon sun for 'Longwood'.
Trees were potted from large liners to gallons in this spring and may not have completely filled out their pots.
