'Woods #2', also known as 'Ed Wood' is one of the largest leaf Acer japonicum selections of any Japanese maple. The large leaves can get quite large, sometimes 8-14 inches depending on maturing and amount of shade this full moon Japanese maple gets. Fall color can range from orange to bright red. This large leaf selection of Acer japonicum was found by by the plantsman Edsal Wood of Oregon. 'Woods #2' may reach 8-10 ft in height and width in 15 years.

Zone 8A Atlanta, full sun, clay soil amended with pine bark soil conditioner. Named by a plantsman but I purchased because of the other Ed Wood. The cross-dressing director (played by Depp in Tim Burton’s ED WOOD) and writer of one of my favorite films ORGY OF THE DEAD (1965).
Anyway, the leaves on this tree are HUGE! It’s vigorous and can handle the heat and humidity of the Georgia piedmont region. It gives a cool tropical feel and I’m going to add a few more in the future around my windmill palm and perennial banana trees. Whether you’re GLEN OR GLENDA, this tree will satisfy that SINISTER URGE, put a smile on any BRIDE OF THE MONSTER and take your garden to PLAN 9 FROM OUTERSPACE.
I have a Woods #2 that’s at least 15-20 years old. The size projected is about right and also the description. The fall color is especially beautiful.
