Acer oliverianum ssp. oliverianum X

'Hot Blonde'

Zones 6-9

Heatseekers Series™

AREA 51 COLLECTION™ PLANTS THAT ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD

'Hot Blonde' was found by the brothers as a chance hybrid between Acer oliverianum and a golden Japanese maple. The result is a gorgeous golden yellow upright Japanese maple with orange border in the spring. 'Hot Blonde' gets more and more yellow as the season goes on. 'Hot Blonde' is a strong growing and vigorous tree, reaching 12-14 ft in 10 years. Fall color on 'Hot Blonde' is an intense fiery red. Last fall, the fall color on 'Hot Blonde' lasted from mid-October to mid-December even in our hot cold frames. This may be perhaps one of our best introductions to date. We even considered patenting this tree but decided finally to release it last year. 'Hot Blonde' will make a great focal point, or a great golden yellow tree to bring out the reds and greens in your landscape.

'Hot Blonde' is one of the most heat tolerant Japanese maples we produce. This heat tolerance allows gardeners the ability to bring more ornamental appeal to the southwest exposure in the southern garden. Gardeners in the South have been looking for this Japanese maple for years. This cultivar must be propagated by grafting onto Acer palmatum. 'Hot Blonde' is part of our Heatseekers Series™ of Heat Tolerant Japanese maples for the South.

Limited Quantities Available !! As we have over a thousand cultivars of Japanese maples, we often do not have many of each cultivar. We recommend that you buy the Japanese maples you want immediately as we often sell out of certain selections.

Hardy!

Great cultivar. When I got mine in ‘23, it was a single trunk, no branches, about 30” tall. Last year it put on 9 branches (the longest of which is 20”), and the trunk’s diameter doubled. Spring and fall are where this cultivar shines. Mustard and red new growth, and in the fall, it turns bright red and orange. Great introduction guys!

Dirty thirty hot blonde

I ordered my hot blonde beginning of spring arrived early it slowly started to leaf compared to the other ones I bought. I can’t wait for it to fully leaf next to the rest of my collection.

Zone 10 compatibility

I have 2 doing well in USDA zone 10A. I have 1 in full sun and the other in partial shade. It is near-summer temperatures (80-90) and no issues so far.

Love their service and tree

So far so good. I purchased this during winter. It was dormant. So really could not tell if it was alive or dead so waited to review. Just planted it in the ground and now I am seeing the tree coming to life. Crossing fingers and hoping the tree will perform great in my California zone 9.
