'Akita yatsubusa’ is slow growing dwarf green Japanese maple with a dense habit and smaller leaves. Fall color is a bright red. In 10 years, ‘Akita yatsubusa’ may reach 3-4 ft in height and width. Because of this small habit, ‘Akita yatsubusa’ is an excellent tree for bonsai culture or container gardening. “Akita” is a prefecture in Japan, while “yatsubusa” means small or dwarf.

Underrated and tough. Stellar form. Buy it!

I’ve had nothing but a great experience over three seasons with this tough little tree growing in Full to Part Sun in zone 8A Atlanta, clay soil amended with pine bark soil conditioner, planted slightly above grade on a slope and mulched with wood chips. Size is listed as 3-4’ in 10 but mine is outpacing those expectations. Akita just has a cool look. Like a Mikawa crossed with Lima Gold in a more upright form. Like Lily Pad, this provides nice textural contrast to a Mikawa type garden, honestly it’s so attractive it may upstage them a little bit. Spring color isn’t flashy but this tree doesn’t really need it. Just a beautiful specimen all season. I haven’t seen it offered very often so you should definitely snatch it up. One of my favorites.

The Akita Yatsubusa received was very nicely formed and healthy. If there ever is a problem the customer service at Mr Maple is very quick to respond and resolve the problem. Love the videos! I will order more maples if I can find room in my yard.
