ACER PALMATUM 'LITTLE FRANCISCO'
Rare Dwarf Japanese Maple
'Little Francisco' is dwarf Japanese maple that is a nice red in the spring through the summer. I just found out that to give 'Little Francisco' best color, give it plenty of sunlight. Our 1 gallons have been in 55% shade, which are currently showing more green colors because of this shade. 'Little Francisco' turns to a bright orange-red in the fall. According to the nurserymen who found this dwarf, 'Little Francisco' is expected to reach reach 4-5 ft in height and by 2.5 ft in width in 15 years.
'Little Francisco' was found as dwarf mutation by our good friend Bob McCaffrey in the Bronx, NY at Woodlawn Cemetary on a red Japanese maple. The following year after Bob grafted this rare "gift", someone pruned off the whole branch that had the mutation. Bob calls what is often called a "witches broom" a "blessing" or a "gift from God", which I totally agree with. By having this dwarf mutation happen on a plant, we can graft it and have a smaller and often more attractive version of the original Japanese maple. This might just be why he is so blessed in finding so many of these dwarf creations. 'Little Francisco' was named after Saint Francisco Marto.
Trees were potted up to 1 gallons in last summer and may have completely filled out their pots.
