Acer palmatum 'Nanase gawa'
Exceptional Fall Color Semi-Pendulous Japanese Maple

Zones 5-9

'Nanase gawa' is a classic Japanese maple from the Sekihin Binran list from the 1800's. This maple is extremely rare to find in the nursery trade, and even more rare to find correct. According to the book Japanese maples, and the original Japanese listing from the 1800's, this a green amoenum, however the book Japanese maples shows a photo of a red Japanese maple. This red Japanese maple got mixed up with 'Nanase gawa' in the nursery trade and is likely 'Muro gawa'. We are offering the correct green form as seen in the photos here.

'Nanase gawa' is green Japanese maple with finger like leaves and small stature with a semi-pendulous habit. New growth during the summer may be bronze-green. 'Nanase gawa' may reach 5-6 ft in height by 6-7 ft in width in 10 years. Fall color can range from yellow to orange. 'Nanase gawa' translates as "River of Seven Currents". My guess this relates to the semi-pendulous habit and different color changes this maple goes throughout the season.
