First listed in 1898 by Yokohama Nursery in Japan, 'Oshio beni' translates as "large red tide" which describes this Japanese maple fairly well. This red Japanese maple selection leafs as a bright red changing to orange-red. This orange-red is very unique for the red uprights and makes this selection stand out and contrast well with other Japanese maples. Mid-summer colors can be a green-red. Fall colors range from orange-red to scarlet. 'Oshio beni' can reach 18-20 ft in 30 years.
