Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Red Select' is a weeping Japanese maple selection that has been incorrectly stated as being synonymous with 'Inaba shidare'. While 'Red Select' leafs out in the spring with similar pubescent leaves, the leaves are much smaller than 'Inaba shidare'. 'Red Select' was actually selected as chance seedling from 'Inaba shidare', hence the similarity. The spring color is a bright red to maroon. During the hottest part of the summer 'Red Select' fades to a green red, still giving an overall red appearance from a distance. Fall color on 'Red Select' is a bright scarlet red. 'Red Select' may reach 4-5 ft in height by 6-7 ft in width in 10 years.
