Acer palmatum 'Sanguineum'

Sanguineum Japanese Maple

Zones 5-9

'Sanguineum' leafs out in the early spring as a bright orange-red on medium-sized rounded leaves. This Japanese maple is quite different, as most upright reds leaf out as a deeper maroon. As the summer approaches shades of chartreuse green begin to show up through a deeper red leaf. Fall colors are bright oranges to intense reds. 'Sanguinum' forms a great mid-sized upright Japanese maple that will reach 10 ft in 15 years.

'Sanguineum' is a beautiful Japanese maple selection that is often mislabeled. In fact, this tree was grafted from the National Arboretum where two maples share this name. One is a green, the other is a red. The name 'Sanguineum' translates as "blood-red" or "orange-red" which describes this selection's brilliant spring color. The tree in this auction was grafted from the red selection that was donated from Henry Hohman of Kingsville Nursery in 1969 (call # NA 31631). Hohman is known and respected for his knowledge of maples. He is one of the "key founding fathers of maples" that helped bring Japanese maples into popularity in America. We believe this to be the one true 'Sanguineum'.
