Acer palmatum 'Twombly's Red Sentinel'
Red Sentinel Columnar Japanese Maple

Zones 5-9

In the late 1970’s, Ken Twombly of Twombly’s Nursery in CT, found a compact growth shaped mutation on a red bloodgood-type of a Japanese maple at a church in eastern Connecticut. When this broom-like mutation was propagated it had a very unusual form. The name of ‘Twombly’s Red Sentinel’ which Ken chose describes this Japanese maple perfectly. These grafted trees remain tall and upright, yet fairly narrow, making it a great mid-sized flag-pole-like tree of color for small spaces.

‘Twombly’s Red Sentinel’ leafs out in the early spring as a bright red, maturing to a deeper maroon by summer. In autumn, the electric red fall color will grab your attention in the landscape. It will reach 8-10 ft in height by 3 ft wide in 15 years. Because of this shape, Ken recommends using this maple as a high class hedge.

1 gallon 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' are about 12-14 inches in height. Trees were potted up to 1 gallons in the spring and may not have completely filled out their pots.

Twomblys red sentinel

I just received my Twomblys red sentinel and it is in excellent condition and was packaged very securely. It is an absolutely beautiful tree, full of leaves, and about 3 feet tall. The shipping was fast.

Awesome tree

We received the 1 galXL it arrived in an order with other trees. The tree was atleast 4ft tall and although it had a few dried up leaves the branches were all intact. The tree overall is beautiful and could have made it another season in its pot for sure. Highly recommend and I'll be needing a few more for my driveway border
