The spring color on ‘Westonbirt Red’ is a green with a bronze hue, maturing to a green for most of the summer. Acer palmatum 'Westonbirt Red' is a beautiful selection of Japanese maple that was an unnamed seedling at Westonbirt Arborteum in England that had phenomenal bright red fall color. The fall color is consistent and stands out in the plantings of hundreds of Japanese maples at Westonbirt Arboretum. As you can see from the photos, when Matt visited Westonbirt Arboretum with Peter Gregory, ‘Westonbirt Red’ was in full glory with fall color. ‘Westonbirt Red’ may reach 8-10 ft in height and width in 10 years. Esveld Nursery worked with Westonbirt Arboretum in the naming and introduction of this famed tree.
