Cornus kousa 'Starlight'
White Flowering Chinese Dogwood
Zones 6-8
The 'Starlight' Chinese Dogwood is a vigorous and upright tree with densely branched and spreading growth. The flowers of 'Starlight' feature large white bracts that last for several weeks in late spring. These develop into raspberry-like fruit in the fall. The tree has green deciduous foliage that turns brick red in the fall, adding a stunning display of color to any landscape. With its almost oriental horizontally-tiered branches and peeling gray bark, it adds an interesting dimension to the overall appearance. Rutgers University did an amazing job breeding this beauty.
This cultivar is low-maintenance and has excellent disease resistance. Being a hybrid created of the popular Cornus kousa and Cornus nuttallii, it retains the beauty of Cornus kousa, but gets some extra vigor from Cornus nuttalli, making this an easy tree for many to grow. It attracts birds and is recommended for accent planting or providing shade. The Starlight Chinese Dogwood prefers full sun to partial shade and requires rich, acidic soil. In colder climates, mulching is recommended in winter for protection. It grows up to 15 ft tall in 10 years making it a striking addition to any garden or landscape.
