Corylopsis glabrescens 'Longwood Chimes'
'Longwood Chimes' Large Flowering Hardy Japanese Winter Hazel
Zones 5b-9
Part Sun-Full Sun
Corylopsis glabrescens 'Longwood Chimes' is one of the most beautiful and most hardy of all the Winter Hazels. Trialed at Longwood Gardens, 'Longwood Chimes' has proven to be a winner. The blooms on 'Longwood Chimes' are some of the largest and most fragrant of the winter hazels, bloooming in late March to early April for us in Western North Carolina, typically 2-3 weeks later than other corylopsis. This makes 'Longwood Chimes' an excellent selection for places that have late frosts, like we often have here near Asheville. It is also a plant that bees love, so this a great plant to put in your garden to save the honeybees. The staff at Longwood Arboretum also noted 'Longwood Chimes' for having exceptional golden fall color. ‘Longwood Chimes’ is said to named from the golden bell flowers that hang from the branches that one could imagine playing songs from the Chimes Bell Tower at Longwood Gardens. 'Longwood Chimes' may reach 6-7 ft in height and width in 15 years.
