Plant people always swoon over the hydrangeas in Japan. Star Gazer™ was hybridized by a breeder in Shizuoka, Japan and patented by Toyokazu Ichie. This Japanese selection has large doubled florets on each flower that are pink to blue rimmed with white variegation. The double flower and bicolor effect is quite striking summer through fall and is extremely ornamental. Star Gazer™ has a nice compact habit reaching 4-5 ft in height and width in 10 years. 

Star Gazer™ may be more pink in alkaline soils, while being more blue in acidic soils. Garden lime may be given to make the soil more alkaline and the blooms more pink on Hydrangea Star Gazer™. You may use a more acidic fertilizer like aluminum sulfate to make the soil more acidic and the blooms more blue in more alkaline soils.
