Magnolia x 'Little Sue'
Deep Red Purple Flower - Small Deciduous Magnolia
Zones 3b-8
Magnolia x 'Little Sue' is a dense compact upright magnolia that was found as dense mutation on the popular selection Magnolia x 'Susan. 'Little Sue' is extremely rare, displaying the same 4-6 inch deep red purple flowers of it's parent, but with a more compact and slow growing habit. The blooms on ‘Little Sue’ bloom mid season and then often rebloom in late summer. Magnolia x 'Little Sue' is expected to reach 4-5 ft in height in 10 years with a shrub-like habit. Don't worry if you 'Little Sue' arrives with no leaves as this is a deciduous magnolia, meaning it looses its leaves every fall.
The parent to this plant is Magnolia x 'Susan' which was hybridized by William Kosar and Dr Francis de Vois at the US National Arboretum by crossing Mangolia liliiflora 'Nigra and Magnolia stellata 'Rosea'. It became part of the "Girl Series" of magnolias. Magnolia 'Susan' became such an amazing plant in the landscape that it won a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. 'Little Sue' was found as witches broom or "blessing" off of Magnolia x 'Susan', creating a denser compact version of the parent tree. ‘Little Sue’ is new and extremely rare.
