An older cultivar, 'Virigata’ has been described as a snake branch spruce. ‘Virigata’ has a tall central leader with branches that can be irregular in habit. The branches are long and horizontal, often whirling “this way and that” and snake-like. 'Virigata' needles are long and dark green. Growth on ‘Virigata’ can be 2-3 ft in a year reaching 20 ft in height in 10 years.
