Pinus strobus 'Sea Urchin'
Rare Dwarf Sea Urchin White Pine Tree
Zones 3-8
'Sea Urchin' is a dwarf selection of white pine that was found by the late Dr. Sidney Waxman of the University of Connecticut. It get's its name, because its shape does look quite like a sea urchin. Dr. Waxman selected 'Sea Urchin' as a seedling from a witches' broom mutation. The blue color and the cushion-like shape make this pine a must in small gardens. Excellent color and the dense slow growth, make 'Sea Urchin' heavily desired among collectors. 'Sea Urchin' typically grows 2-3 inches of growth a year. 'Sea Urchin' may reach 2 ft by 3 ft in 10 years.
Trees were potted from large liners to gallons in this spring and may not have completely filled out their pots.
