Taxodium distichum

Rare Bald Cypress

Zones 4-11

Taxodium distichum, often called a bald cypress, is an excellent tree to use in your landscape and garden. It is a deciduous native conifer that is resistant to deer, salt, pollution, and wet soil. This makes bald cypress an extremely useful tree in the landscape. A bald cypress is actually native tree and provides habitat for many birds. Taxodium may be used in average soil conditions, but can also be used soaked marsh-like conditions where other trees will not grow.

In the spring, small soft needles emerge from the branches, turning to burnt orange to cinnamon brown in the fall before dropping its needles. A bald cypress is a fast growing tree, growing almost 2 ft every year once it is established. In 10 years, a taxodium may reach nearly 20 ft in height with a pyramidal habit.
