Cornus kousa var. chinensis, also known as Chinese Dogwood, is a superb small to medium-sized deciduous tree with a graceful, spreading habit and outstanding ornamental appeal. In late spring to early summer, this tree puts on a spectacular floral display with layers of pointed, star-like white bracts that arrive about a month after our native Cornus florida. Unlike the rounded bracts of the American Dogwood, these blooms offer a more refined, elegant look—and they come without the worry, as C. kousa shows excellent resistance to the common disease pressures that affect native dogwoods. Through spring and summer, dogwoods shine with profuse blooms in a range of showy colors, and C. kousa carries that beauty into autumn with rich foliage that blazes in shades of orange-red, scarlet, and purple. This tree is a standout choice for lawns, woodland gardens, borders, bird sanctuaries, and naturalized plantings.
