Disanthus ovatifolius

~Redbud Hazel~

Zones 7-9

Disanthus ovatifolius is a rare and exquisite gem from the mountains of northern Vietnam, offering year-round interest with its elegant form and exceptional foliage. A member of the witch-hazel family, this semi-evergreen shrub to small tree can reach up to 10 feet tall in optimal conditions. Its narrowly ovate leaves emerge with a rich purple flush in spring before maturing to a lush green, providing a dynamic seasonal display. In autumn, it steals the show with striking, ribbon-like pink-red flowers borne in charming pairs—reminiscent of witch-hazel blooms. Formerly introduced as Uocodendron whartonii, this newly named species is best grown in humus-rich, moist, acidic soil with dappled to full shade. Hardy in USDA zones 7–9, Disanthus ovatifolius thrives with minimal pruning and brings a unique elegance to woodland gardens, shaded borders, or as a specimen plant for the discerning collector.
