Pinus nigra ‘Chinto’ is a compact, dwarf selection of Austrian pine distinguished by its dense, rounded habit and light green needles that maintain excellent color year-round. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen typically reaches about 2 ft tall and 2.5 ft wide, displaying a slow and steady growth rate ideal for rock gardens, troughs, or small landscapes. This unique cultivar was discovered as a witches’ broom on a tree growing among sand dunes in the Netherlands and was later introduced to the nursery trade by John Vermeulen of John Vermeulen & Son, Inc., NJ, sometime before 2010.
