Pinus parviflora 'Kusu-dama' Dwarf White Pine
Pinus parviflora 'Kusu-dama'
Rare Dwarf White Pine Tree
Zones 5-8
Pinus parviflora 'Kusu-dama' is named after the traditional Japanese decorative ball, and this cultivar growing into precisely that: a dense, globose mound of blue-green foliage. The needles are classic Japanese white pine, five to a bundle, blue-green, arranged in the tight, tufted clusters that give this species its distinctive brushy texture. What sets 'Kusu-dama' apart is the density of its bud clusters, which pack the branching and give the whole plant an unusually full, almost sculptural presence even in winter.
A cultivar found in Japan and introduced by Valavanis in 1976. Growth is genuinely slow, roughly 3 by 3 ft in ten years. It is an ideal choice for rock gardens, troughs, containers. Hardy in Zones 4–7, it wants full sun and well-drained soil. Like all parviflora, it has the constitution of a tree that evolved on exposed mountain slopes: drought tolerant once established.
