Syringa vulgaris ‘Congo'

Lilac Tree

Zones 3-7

Full Sun - Partial Sun

Syringa vulgaris ‘Congo’ — commonly called Congo Lilac — is a compact, upright cultivar celebrated for its large, richly fragrant violet-purple flower panicles that appear in late spring. Its lush, dark green foliage provides a striking contrast to the vivid blooms, and the plant’s hardy, low-maintenance nature makes it a reliable choice for many landscapes. In 10 years, ‘Congo’ typically grows to about 8–10 ft tall and 6–8 ft wide, forming a dense, upright habit ideal for use as a specimen, in mixed borders, or as a fragrant focal point.

As JJ Miller notes, “Congo is very distinct, in that you can see the prominent yellow reproductive parts in the center of the florets very clearly,” and “the panicles look like clusters of grapes as they begin opening,” giving this lilac a truly unique visual charm.
