Acer palmatum 'Alpenweiss' | Cultivar Spotlight
Acer palmatum 'Alpenweiss'
Zones: 5-9
'Alpenweiss' is a stunning reticulated variegated maple known for its striking pink and white variegation. This cultivar remains smaller in size compared to the 'Higasayama' maple over the long term. It was discovered as a chance seedling by Bob Baltzer of Baltzer Nursery in Oregon.
Seasonal Color Changes
In spring, 'Alpenweiss' showcases bright pink reticulated variegation that gradually fades to cream, then white, and finally to green. In the fall, the tree's colors can return to the vibrant pink reticulation seen in spring.
Growth and Maturity
Mature heights of 'Alpenweiss' are expected to reach around 12-14 feet over a span of 25 years. Notably, this tree does not revert to non-variegated forms.
Variegation Behavior
Like most reticulated maples, 'Alpenweiss' may not display variegation when grown in cold frames in Western North Carolina. However, once planted or left outside, the variegation will reappear the following year, ensuring a consistent display of its unique and beautiful foliage.
