Acer palmatum 'Peve Multicolor'

Zones: 5-9

Variegation: While 'Peve Multicolor' can be inconsistent in its variegation, when it does display this characteristic, it stands out as one of the most stunning Japanese maples among our 1,000 cultivars. Contrary to some beliefs, this tree does not revert; its variegation is influenced by environmental conditions, similar to 'Ukigumo.' Factors such as morning sun, afternoon shade, rainfall, and winter temperatures can significantly impact the extent of its variegation.

Spring: In years of heavy variegation, 'Peve Multicolor' leaves emerge with a striking sand-dusting reticulation, appearing almost entirely white with green veining and a pinkish-purple border. When conditions are optimal, this variegation can persist through most of the year. In less variegated years, the leaves are bright chartreuse green with a purple-red border.

Summer: During mid-summer, the variegated leaves retain some white sand-dusting while becoming more green and losing the spring border. In non-variegated years, the leaves turn a solid green by mid-summer.

Fall: The fall colors of 'Peve Multicolor' are consistently vibrant, ranging from bright golden yellows to oranges, regardless of the level of variegation earlier in the year.

Growth Conditions: For the best chance of heavy variegation, provide morning sun and afternoon shade. Cooler winter temperatures tend to enhance the variegation display by breaking up leaf pigmentation.

Size: 'Peve Multicolor' reaches a moderate size, making it an excellent choice for adding unique visual interest to your garden.
