Twombly's Red Sentinel | Cultivar Spotlight
Acer palmatum 'Twombly's Red Sentinel'
Discovering a compact growth mutation on a red bloodgood-type of Japanese maple in a church located in eastern Connecticut, Ken Twombly of Twombly's Nursery in CT, propagated this broom-like mutation with an unusual form. He aptly named it 'Twombly's Red Sentinel.' These grafted trees are tall, upright, and relatively narrow, making them a perfect mid-sized, flag-pole-like tree that adds color to small spaces.
'Twombly's Red Sentinel' displays bright red leaves in early spring, which deepen into a maroon hue as summer approaches. In autumn, the electric red foliage is a showstopper in any landscape. It reaches a height of 8-10 ft and a width of 3ft within 15 years. Ken recommends using this maple as a high-class hedge because of its shape. 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' thrives in Zones 5 through 9.
