Acer tegmentosum
Manchurian Snakebark Maple
Zones 4b-9
Acer tegmentosum, known as the Manchurian maple, has large leaves with 3 to 5 points on the leaves. In Japan, this type of leaf is often known as "kaede" which means 'frog's foot' to describe the shape of the leaf. The bark of Acer tegmentosum has white striations on the light green bark. This gives an excellent contrast, giving the appearance of snakes skin. This gives an excellent year-round interest. Fall color on Acer tegmentosum is typically a bright yellow. Acer tegmentosum reaches 12-15 ft in height in 10 years with a canopy of equal width.
Acer tegmentosum is native to Usuri and Amur Rivers of Russia, mountainous areas of North Korea, and Northeast China. Tegmentosum comes from the word, "tegmentosus" that means "covered" or "hidden".
