I took reviewer Mike's advice and got 2 of the 1 gallon when they were available. I wasn't sure about them at first but they are starting their 3rd growing season with me and they are vigorous, and this counts me moving both of them after first planting. The one that takes the most afternoon sun is almost 5ft tall. I staked it to help shape it and it is just lovely. Shortly after moving it last spring, in early summer, it had many leaves that had spots, so i carefully trimmed all of them off, leaving the petioles, about 40% of the total leaves. This resulted in a mid-summer growth spurt. It is over a foot taller and fuller in branching than the one that did not get the leaves trimmed off. Totally healthy, this is one tough cultivar. It must be the trident species and careful production. I have a plain, straight species, trident NOT from Mrmaple, that was butchered before shipping and girdling itself in the nursery pot, to the point i had to root prune severely to relieve pressure on the root flare, wounding the bark. I thought it was a goner but it is undeterred. I am waiting to get another MS from Mrmaple for another super sunny spot in a front corner bed. The yellow color is intense with more sun, the leaves are soft. It responds well to shaping with stakes and gentle garden tape/tie. A very agreeable rewarding tree to have! Golden trident, also starts out bronze or orange then turns gold absolutely fantastic tree. First one I bought was mutated by a natural pesticide and is pink and yellow now. So I bought a second from Mr. Maple...fourth total. Yes I am that person...moral of the story this new batch is outstanding the graft is slightly wonky for bonsai unless I put it in the ground for a while and use other methods to reduce it in time. Well worth it get one or two if you can!
